OUR GARDENS

'A garden to walk in and immensity to dream in -- what more could he ask? A few flowers at his feet and above him the stars.' Victor Hugo, Les Misérables

WHAT'S HAPPENING -- IN THE GARDEN

November / December -- Lavender plants are budding and should be fully in flower around mid-December.  See our December events.

JANUARY -- Alan and his team will be planting more alyssum, impatiens, and petunias.

JANUARY -- Perce will be installing the viewing platform -- in our topiary garden.

FEBRUARY -- Lucy will be launching exciting new garden classes.

Merribee’s garden spans seven acres of sensory splendour.  Since purchasing the property in 2000, it’s been an evolving masterpiece for Lucy and Richard Marshall. Plant life flourishes in this coastal land, which was first settled in the mid-1800s as part of Alexander’s Berry’s 100-square mile estate. With the assistance of horticulturist James Thompson, the Marshall's have slowly fashioned this plot into a licorice-all sorts of a garden with diverse plantings of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants.

Wander through the formal garden rooms, including the Rose Garden, the hedged Potager Garden, the walled Snow Pear Garden, the Cottage Garden, Crepe Myrtle Walk, the Herb Garden, the Lavender Paddock, the Bunya Bunya Copse and finish up at the adjoining hedging, topiary and rose nursery.

The grounds display an embarrassment of earthly riches – the fragrances waft from every nook and cranny, the birdlife is as vibrant as the garden’s rainbow palette and the edible fruits range from mango, guava and apple to pomegranate, passionfruit and avocados.

The estate is also home to beehives that yield the sweetest Merribee honey.  Fall in love with the Merribee blooms and have them cut for you to purchase as a takeaway bouquet.

THE GARDEN SCHOOL

On Wednesdays we offer Topiary classes (bookings essentials, please search Eventbrite under Merribee) and to celebrate Lavender Season at Merribee, Lucy is hosting a Special Lavender Workshop on Sunday, December 17. This creative and fun class will run from 9.30am - 12.30pm and will include making two traditional gifts to take home, perfect for Christmas/Gift giving: A Lavender Wreath (that you can keep for many years) and a Lavender Bottle (a craft from Elizabethan times and used to ward off moths. Also makes a room or linen cupboard smell divine). Class includes tuition, lavender, vine wreath, ribbon and all materials. BOOK HERE
