The Granary at Merribee is a four-storey circular concrete tower [ an original grain silo ] built in the 1950s, that stands approximately 12 m high and 4.5 m wide.
Since taking over Merribee in 2000, Lucy and Richard have been keen to restore this old farm building. It was not until 2009, with Kevin Bull’s design skills and Martin Keat's building nouse that restoration commenced.
Sixty years of intense farming use (and very little TLC) had left the building quite dilapidated. On the other hand, the concrete structure was in excellent shape. Renovation work included the installation of curved steel staircases linking four newly installed floors, the installation of new windows at each level and the construction of an entirely new roof and top floor level.
Here's a quick tour:
- You enter this circular concrete building at ground floor into a spare room and entrance area.
- The first flight of stairs takes you to the bathroom level, where a freestanding claw-footed bath sits resplendent, opposite the view. A vanity and toilet are located either side of the bath, while an upholstered seat offers a restful view of this extraordinary room.
- The second flight of stairs takes you up to the main bedroom level with a double bed. This is a cosy room with views out on three sides across the gardens and surrounding paddocks.
- The third and final flight of stairs takes you to the lookout and lounge. Relax and gaze at the ever changing uninterrupted 360 degree district views.
We offer The Granary at Merribee as additional accommodation - for those staying at Merribee’s main house and studio - or as self-contained accommodation.
